Maple Syrup Dumplings (Grands-Pères)

Canne de sirop d'érable

A classic Quebec dessert, these maple syrup grandpas are moist and comforting. A traditional recipe to enjoy warm!

Ingredients

Dough:
  • 2 cups white flour (500 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons (25 ml) sugar
  • 4 teaspoons (20 ml) baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon (3 ml) salt
  • 1/3 cup (75 ml) softened butter or margarine
  • 1 cup (250 ml) milk
Syrup:
  • 1 ¾ cups (440 ml) maple syrup
  • 1 ¾ cups (440 ml) water

Preparation

  1. Make the pastry: mix the butter with the sugar until smooth, then add the dry ingredients and finish with the milk.
  2. Bring the syrup and water to the boil in a large pot with a lid.
  3. Drop the dough by spoonfuls into the hot syrup, spacing the spoonfuls well apart to allow the dough to rise.
  4. Cover and simmer over a medium heat, without lifting the lid, for about 15 minutes.
