Mother's Day is just around the corner! To help you please your mom with a little attention, we've put together a few gift ideas from our merchants. Of course, special attention will be paid to florists who are preparing to offer you the very best for this special occasion with their bouquets of local flowers.

Local flowers that WILL BE POPULAR THIS YEAR

The classic Mother's Day gift is of course the flower, which is always a pleasure to receive and to give. At your local florists, a wide range of local flowers awaits you. Roses and tulips are always the stars of the show, but other varieties, such as orchids, are also worth discovering.

At Jean-Talon Market

At Brindille, quincaillerie végétale in the Jean-Talon Market, orchids will be popular this year. They'll have an abundance of them in every color, thanks to the hard work of their partners, who have been working for several months to ensure that they bloom at this particular time of year. This plant, which may seem intimidating at first glance, can bloom more than once as long as you give it the right care. The in-store experts will give you all the tips and tricks you need to pass them on to your mother.  Fragrant plants such as jasmine and anthurium are also on offer.

“We exclusively offer locally-grown varieties that we select ourselves from an orchid grower in Laval. We ensure quality in person because we want to offer the best to our customers.” - Maud from Brindille, quincaillerie végétale.

At Binette et Filles at Jean-Talon Market, bouquets are prepared according to the inspiration of the moment and seasonal arrivals. The team also assures us that no bouquet recipes are used. For those of you who don't live in the city, but your mother does, you can order a bouquet in advance and have it delivered the same day. But it's even better to go on-site, as there will be thousands (yes yes!) of bouquets available!

“We get inspired a few days before Mother's Day, depending on what's available. The flowers that surprise us with their flamboyance and color will be used in the composition of the bouquets. As we don't have a recipe for bouquets, customers can be sure that each year's bouquet will be different. When we can (and weather permitting), we'll have a nice selection of Quebec spring flowers. People ask for them, and when we can, we create small seasonal bouquets.” - Myriam from Binette & Fille

Fleuriste Chez Daniel has been at Jean-Talon Market for 45 years, so they have all the expertise you need to choose from the huge variety of products from Quebec and around the world. You can also request delivery by ordering on site, by phone or via their Facebook page.

At Maisonneuve Market

For the team at Comptoir Lavigne - Fleuriste de Quartier at Maisonneuve Market, Mother's Day is one of the sweetest times of the year. At their boutique, you'll find tulips, garden roses, lisianthus and snapdragons.

“We've also brought back the Morgan bouquet this year. It's a bouquet with a bright, elegant composition filled with love, much appreciated by our customers. In the boutique, we also have a selection of country bouquets and arrangements in pots or vases.” - Lavigne team

At Atwater Market

For flowers at this market, head to Fleuriste Chez Louisette. They'll be their superb bouquets of local flowers.

“For Mother's Day, we work a lot with flowers from Quebec, Ontario and Prince Edward Islands, including the beautiful tulips from Saint-Joseph-du-Lac.” - Fleuriste Chez Louisette team.

Unless you're looking for something really special, the florists recommend showing up directly on the day and asking any questions the same day. Expert teams will be on hand to give advice and guide you towards the best choice. At the Lavigne counter at Marché Maisonneuve, order-taking closes on Friday May 9 at 1pm. After this date, orders will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to availability in the boutique.

Beyond flowers: some gift ideas

Plants, perennials and gardening equipment also make excellent Mother's Day gifts. For those with a garden, think of perennials, small shrubs, lilacs or roses that will bloom year after year.

Outdoors, horticultural merchants are back and will also have an abundance of annual flowers, window boxes and plants to please moms. At the Centre Jardin Atwater, they've prepared a large number of flower pots and hanging baskets especially for the occasion, for those who prefer to give a gift that will bloom all summer long.

“Our calibrachoa arrangements are particularly popular for Mother's Day. They're 100% local plants that require very little maintenance. All it takes is almost daily watering and weekly fertilization” - Centre Jardin Atwater team.

Brindille, quincaillerie végétale offers a large variety of beautiful handcrafted pottery and pot and Binette & Filles offers soaps made with local flowers in collaboration with a soap factory in the Magdalen Islands.

A stroll through one of the markets would also be an excellent way to give pleasure. After all, sharing quality time with a loved one is a great way to show your affection. Take the opportunity to enjoy a gourmet break in one of the restaurant areas.

Or consider preparing a delicious home-cooked meal using the fresh, seasonal produce available from our merchants. Crabs, prawns and lobsters will work wonders in a sumptuous seafood platter to impress and delight your mom.

If you're not sure what to choose, Montreal Public Markets gift certificates are an ideal option. They give every mother the freedom to choose the gift that perfectly suits her tastes and desires, while supporting local businesses.
