Your merchants in the spotlight
This summer, your favorite merchants got a very special spotlight! Alexandrine Couture, Community Manager at Marchés publics de Montréal, took her camera down the market aisles to capture their portraits live from the market! Through these shots, it’s not just faces that appear, but stories, passions and traditions that are brought to light.

In the summer of 2022, our team published the project Portraits de Famille with the aim of telling market stories. Over fifty merchants agreed to take part, sharing stories of their trade, traditions and secrets of know-how. By delving into the stories behind these portraits, we discover what lies beneath a simple squash, a tomato, a pastry or a good cup of coffee. After all, there’s always a passionate grower, a talented food artisan, a creative entrepreneur or a family who’s been dedicated to their craft for generations. And, in our public markets, that trade is to feed people.
Two years after this first chapter, it was clear that there were still many stories to be told. So this new portrait series follows in the footsteps of that first project, to introduce you to even more merchants!
Whether at the Atwater Market, the Jean-Talon Market or the Maisonneuve Market, a new generation of merchants is taking over! Have you noticed them? This generational transition is an asset for public markets. It guarantees the continuity of know-how while ensuring its evolution. It’s a promise for the future of Montreal’s public markets, and we wanted to share it with you in these photos.
Each time the photos were posted on Facebook or Instagram, the feedback from customers was unanimous. Many shared their enthusiasm at seeing the merchants they’ve known for years in the digital world.
“The beautiful ladies of the market”, ‘Let’s go team’ and ‘You girls are the best’ were some of the comments under the photos.
One thing’s for sure, these publications and the reactions they’ve created show a sincere appreciation for the expertise found in our markets. Customers enjoy seeing familiar faces!
“When you put a face to a story, it changes everything,” Alexandrine points out. Customers discover that they’re not just supporting a product, but individuals and families. That’s what makes the buying experience all the more precious. With this project, you could say that appetite comes with love!”
