Situated in the heart of Little Italy, Jean-Talon Market is one of the oldest public Markets in Montréal. Inaugurated in May 1933, it was first called the Marché du Nord, but in 1983, its name was changed in honour of Jean-Talon, the first intendant of New France. Village-like and family-friendly, it’s a place where generations of both merchants and customers have grown up. Jean-Talon Market stands out with its many local fruit and vegetable growers, its diversity of small shopkeepers (butchers, bakers, fishmongers, grocers, etc.) and its restaurateurs, who are sure to whet your appetite when you visit. Whether you’re a locavore or on the hunt for gastronomic treasure, you’ll find high quality, seasonal and fresh produce every day from your growers and processors. Jean-Talon Market is overflowing with local specialties, but also products from other places: there’s something for every occasion and every taste! Jean-Talon Market is open year-round and its enthusiastic and experienced producers and merchants offer fresh and locally grown or processed foods, and discoveries from other places. Jean-Talon Market, one of the largest open-air markets in North America, bustles with activity year round (except for December 25 and 26, and January 1 and 2, when it is closed for the holidays). Every year, after the first frosts, walls are erected around the market so you can shop in comfort, sheltered from the winter’s chill. Towards the end of April, when it starts to warm up, our logistics team removes Jean-Talon Market’s “winter coat.” The walls are put away until October. The outdoor season begins with the arrival of the first horticulturalists, followed by market gardeners. Then, in an atmosphere redolent with the scent of flowers, herbs and other typical market aromas, you can stroll through the various outdoor aisles and visit your producers and merchants. In the summer, pedestrians rule! From June to October, the alleys of Jean-Talon Market are closed to vehicular traffic on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Cyclists are also asked to walk their bicycles, or to lock them up at the market entrances. Jean-Talon Market is easy to get to by bus or Metro, with Metro stations and bus stops only a few minutes away. There are also 410 underground and outdoor parking spaces.
